Cornhole

Cornhole

The All-American Yard Game

Often called the “Bean Bag Toss,” Cornhole is a simple yet addictive game of accuracy and skill that has become a staple at tailgates, barbecues, beaches, and parties across the United States.

What is Cornhole?

Cornhole is a lawn game where two teams or individuals take turns throwing fabric bags (originally filled with corn kernels, hence the name) onto a raised platform, or board, with a hole in the far end.

The Goal: Be the first team to reach 21 points exactly, by either sinking the bags into the hole or landing them on the board.

The Rules and Scoring:

  1. The Court: Two Cornhole boards (approximately 2×4 feet) are placed facing each other, usually separated by a distance of about 27 feet (8.2 meters).

  2. The Bags: Eight bags are used, typically four of one color (e.g., blue) and four of another (e.g., red).

  3. The Play: Players alternate throws until all eight bags have been tossed.

  4. Cancellation Scoring (Crucial Rule): Points are only awarded to the team that scores more points in a round. The lower score cancels out the higher score.

    • 3 Points: A bag that goes through the hole (Cornhole).

    • 1 Point: A bag that lands and remains on the board (Coonbag / Woody), without touching the ground.

    • 0 Points: A bag that hits the ground before landing on the board, or hangs over the edge and touches the ground (Dirty Bag)

Scoring Example:

    • Team A scores 6 points (two bags in the hole).

    • Team B scores 4 points (one bag in the hole, one on the board).

    • Round Score: 6 – 4 = 2 points awarded to Team A.

The game continues until one team reaches 21 points or more. It is a deceptively simple game that combines strategic throwing with a fun, social atmosphere.
